Updated: Oct 19, 2019

Dasa = Ten

Maha = Great

Vidya = Wisdom / Knowledge

Women are at the mercy of cyclical processes, from the moment menstruation starts whether we like it or not we live with rhythms and cycles of hormonal surges. These hormonal surges leave deep physical, mental, emotional and energetic imprints bringing with them all sorts of interesting emotions to navigate.

Yoga provides a medium in which we can explore, connect, heal and resolve our cyclical experiences, Yoga also provides an outlet for creative expression and this is where the Dasa Maha Vidya give us a gift.

This gang of 10 goddesses whose origins lie deep within ancient Tantric ritual are both powerful and benign. Often depicted as fearsome, frightening, fierce and strong, sometimes as benign, sexual, nurturing, others are outrageous and wild. The goddesses are armed with all manner of weapons and magical powers (Siddhis) which they use to slay the demons of ego and ignorance, each goddess has their own Mantra and Yantra.

Each goddess is attributed specific qualities, moods and personalities often viewed as reflecting moods, and phases of the female life experience; as mothers, lovers, home-keepers, workers, artists, teachers, business women and all multifaceted skills women present in their many roles.

For (modern) women in yoga the Dasa Maha Vidya can provide a practical and empowering tool for personal development, emotional stability and inner knowledge. Enabling access to a rationale for our many changing cyclical experiences and finding expressive resolve for thoughts and feelings.

Practices, meditations, Mantra can be directed towards a particular goddesses personal strengths thus invoking our own personal qualities which we may need to overcome a life obstacle or to fully experience an aspect of our own being and sense of Self.

In a way the Dasa Maha Vidya give an ancient format of psychotherapy and a method for gaining insight into (female) human behaviour patterns.

Working with the Dasa Maha Vidya through yoga offers a creative, expressive and deeply feminine, uplifting experience.
